5 Signs to Look For When Danger is Near: We believe that it’s more effective to prevent an attack than to find yourself in a situation where you need to defend yourself physically. During our training sessions, you’ll often hear us emphasize the importance of staying alert, ready, and aware of your surroundings.
It’s important to recognize that there are usually warning signs indicating someone might be about to attack. By being aware of these red flags, you can take steps to protect yourself and avoid the pain and trauma that comes with an assault.
Every situation involving an attack and the attacker is unique, but if you recognize any of the warning signs mentioned below, it’s crucial to respond. Avoid telling yourself that you’re being too sensitive, judgmental, or paranoid. Act quickly to ensure your safety.
Pre-attack Indicators
1) Gut Instinct
Your most valuable tool is your internal alarm system. Never overlook the strength of your intuition. Whether it’s that fluttering sensation in your stomach, a tingling on your skin, or an uneasy feeling that someone is observing you, always listen to your instincts.
Most of the time, our quick judgments are spot on, so there’s no need to feel guilty about ‘judging’ someone in this scenario. Trusting your instincts is your best line of defense.
Your subconscious mind is incredibly skilled at spotting potential dangers. It pays attention to the smallest details, and if something minor seems off, it will pick up on it and send you signals through physical sensations in your body.
Tip: start paying attention to your gut feelings in your daily life. How does yours manifest? Where do you feel it in your body? The more you tune in to your intuition and act on it, the sharper your instincts will become.
2) Body Language
Observing the body language of people in your vicinity is very important, and it works in tandem with your intuition. If you detect any body language that feels off, unusual, or just wrong, be sure to take a closer look.
Keep an eye out for these body language warning signs:
- When someone is fidgeting and displaying anxious movements, it often points to nervous energy. This behavior can serve as a warning that the individual may be feeling heightened adrenaline and tension before taking action.
- When someone is nearby and engaging with you, pay attention to their gestures and body language, as these can indicate their intention to take action.
- A clenched fist, a tense jaw, and a wrinkled forehead can all indicate that someone might be about to strike.
3) Concealed hand(S)
Are you able to see their hands? Are they completely open? If both hands and all fingers aren’t visible, it’s worth considering what they might be hiding.
When a person’s hand is in a pocket, behind their back, or obscured by something, there’s a chance it could be clutching a knife, gun, acid, or some other dangerous item.
4) Clearing hands
Keep an eye out for someone who is clearing their hands. This could mean they’re tucking their phone away, adjusting their pants, or even dropping a bag on the ground. Such actions can indicate that they’re getting ready to use their hands for an aggressive move.
5) Abnormal eye movement
Eyes can reveal a lot, but if you can see someone’s eyes, they might be too close for your peace of mind. An attacker typically sizes up their target, evaluating whether they’re an easy mark. If they’re planning to rob you, they might be sneaking glances at the item they have in mind—like your bag, a pricey watch, or your phone.
What to do if you notice pre-attack warning signs
When you spot the red flags, you already have an upper hand since you’re paying attention. You’ve eliminated their surprise advantage. A lot of people are so engrossed in their phones or everyday activities that they don’t notice what’s going on around them.
Simply being aware that you see through their plans might be enough to stop the attack from happening. Keep in mind, they prefer to target those who are vulnerable.
If someone is targeting you and you feel uneasy or in danger, here are some steps you can take:
- Listen to your inner voice from the very start
- When you see red flags, it’s important to act promptly—don’t delay!
- Show confidence in your presence and be direct in your approach
- Look them in the eye for a moment to signal that you’re aware of their intentions. This demonstrates your strength and assertiveness, indicating that you won’t be an easy target.
- Always keep your distance from them. This could involve changing your path, turning back, hurrying away, seeking assistance, or even signaling a passing car—do whatever is necessary to keep them at bay.
- If someone approaches you after you’ve attempted to distance yourself or if you feel trapped and unsafe, it might be necessary to take immediate action to protect yourself. In such situations, respond quickly and decisively, then make your way to safety.
We trust that by tuning into your instincts and being aware of these warning signs, you’ll never find yourself needing to resort to physical force for self-defense.
